Dover 1940's Weekend
16th and 17th June 2007
On the Weekend of the 16th and 17th June 2007 all the locals
of ''Hellfire Corner'' (that's Dover, to you and me!) ventured out of their bunkers and into the glorious grounds of the Pencester
Gardens to enjoy a World War treat focusing on the historical happenings of ''Our Finest Hour'' as one Winston Churchill once
put it.
The weekend had wonderful weather with a delightful array of displays and stands
focusing on all things from the 1940s, including some very smartly dressed gentleman and ladies from various groups and organisations
such as the Kent Timewarp Car and Costume Group and the Hellfire Corner Association.
Hitler himself was also present (see bottom picture) trying to explain why he hurt
our town so bad during the 1940s, some might say he was scared, others assume from the picture he was a scarecrow! All this
was amongst our ornate bandstand which was playing the sounds of the 1940s from our 40s sweetheart singer ably assisted by
local radio presenter Terry Nunn, the man behind all things technical. No doubt, some might say she sang ''White Cliffs of
Dover'' although it was more likely a seagull was to be seen instead of those rather rare Bluebirds.
The day was most enjoyable with the chance to reminisce in days gone by focusing
on the caves, actions and fashions of our Hellfire Corner forebares and connections. The Dover War Memorial Project were also
on hand to give information regarding our war memorial and the stories that lie behind the names plus the chance to see war
memorabilia.
A very successful day and we well recommend you visiting next year.
